Setting up the studio at Trail's End

Now that our ceramic studio is all set up and ready to go, it's time to dive into the exciting world of creation! With clay at our fingertips and inspiration in our hearts we find endless possibilities in our newly established space. Our creativity knows no bounds and with the Sleeping Giant State Park in our backyard and New Haven down the hill we have positioned ourselves perfectly to be both country and city mice.

People have asked why we left the bucolic Powder Hill Farm and it really is about location. We need the diversity, grit, art, culture, and unexpected encounters that only a city can offer. Fortunately we found in Maine that we also like the peace and serenity of a woodland paradise.

A year ago we began the search for the right spot perfectly positioned to take advantage of both situations. We could not have found a more ideal location here at Trail's End with the bonus of a house that is modern and in need of our special brand of love and attention to bring it back to its former glory after many years of neglect. To fully realize our vision for the space our work here will take years and we are looking forward to putting in the energy and love necessary.

The lower level of our home is now J Schatz Studio. Perfectly situated with indoor and outdoor space to work and play. The kilns are actually housed in an exterior sun room we call the Kiln Hut. The deck faces a pool which is going to be a bonus on hot days this summer and beyond is four acres of untamed forest full of birds, critters, and the occasional black bear. Yes the bears destroyed three feeders before we hung them higher and out of reach therefore bear-proofing our feeders. Over the past month we have carved three paths into the forest that we are looking forward to filling with our work. You can also forest bath in them. It's really magical.

Our ceramic work in the studio begins again and coincides with the arrival of Spring. From the humble lump of clay to the finished masterpiece, every step of the process is filled with wonder and possibility.

Step 1: Roll up sleeves
Step 2: Get hands dirty
Step 3: Make magic in the studio
Step 4: Visit and share with friends

If you are in the area please schedule a studio visit and we will take you on a tour of the studio and a walk through our forest. You will love what you see and leave inspired and refreshed. Maybe you will find a piece of wonder to take along with you.

With joy and gratitude for finding our way to Trail's End and your continued support.
